Well it’s here again…the time of year when coffee is your best friend and a 15 minute nap can make your day.
Is it just me or is it really colder when you crawl out of a warm bed to go out and check heifers? I remember one time night-calving for an older couple—it had just got light enough to see and I was bringing in a T'd off cow. I got her into the corral got the gate shut and had go around a corner to get her into the barn. Since I was on horseback I wasn't too bothered about the whole deal, but then I heard a bunch of hollering around the corner. When I got there she had everybody treed. I could hear somebody hollering but the voice sounded far away. I looked all over for who it was. The voice was coming from down low, somewhere. Then my horse spooked and was looking at the hen house door, I mean the little door down by the ground where the chickens walk in and out. There was the grown son peeking out the hen house door. "Is she gone?"
I had tears from laughing so hard.
Well back to business. Tammy put this list (.pdf) together of things to have on hand for calving. As I was looking through it the two things that jumped out at me were lidocaine for spinals, and Ace for the grumpy ones. Stop in and I'll show you the spot for the spinal.
